This is my first cover of a final boss theme - ever! - and I'm beyond excited to finally share it with you. No but really though, I've wanted to cover this song since last October and today that dream comes true.
Part of what makes this theme so cool is how the time feel changes after the intro: while the beginning feels like it's in 12/8, it clearly switches to 6/4 after all the drums come in. The original theme has more electronic sounds creating a sense of urgency when fighting Drawcia and I decided to use a bunch of concert percussion (drums/auxiliary specifically) to make that sound with live instruments. Of course when I decide to do something like that, there's no such thing as "a little bit" - no no no, if I'm going all out with the drums then I'M GOING ALL OUT WITH THE DRUMS! We've got bass/snare, djembe, congas (new congas WHOO!), frame drum, hi-hat, tambourine, claves, and triangle! Then you add in all the mallet percussion, which has a decent amount of tough note runs in there. There's also a distinct character between the woods (xylo/marimba) and the metals (vibes, glock, and I'm gonna go ahead and include toy piano here since it goes with the glock) that carries throughout the whole arrangement. After recording all the parts, it was fairly tricky finding a balance between the drums/aux and the mallet percussion in the final mix.
Overall there are a ton of layers to this arrangement and I'm really proud of it. I've wanted to cover this song for a long time and I actually started arranging it back in June, so it's incredibly satisfying to see all that hard work pay off. I hope you enjoy this cover as much as I have!
