They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, and have since become a staple in Mario spin-off games; more skeletal Koopas have since appeared in the Mario franchise, such as Bony Beetle and Dry Bowser. They are voiced by Toru Asakawa.
Dry Bones are infamous for one feature: their ability to regenerate. Their bodies often collapse when attacked, but the undead Koopas soon revive themselves and become normal once again; some methods of attack can still permanently defeat them. Dry Bones is commonly made a lightweight character in some spinoff games, and is sometimes accompanied by Boo. The emblem used by Dry Bones in some appearances is based off a profile of their head.
Dry Bones also appear in Super Mario World. In this game, they act the same as in Super Mario Bros. 3. However, there is a new type of Dry Bones that throws bones at the player. They can be defeated by Cape Feather or the Starman. They also turn around at ledges, similar to Red Koopa Troopas, instead of just falling, a trait that Dry Bones retain in the later New Super Mario Bros. games. Some of the Dry Bones in this game can throw bones at Mario, which is also an occasional trait in later games.
