Dune Name & Visual References In Gundam & Further Star Trek (1960's) Connections
I point out some possible influences of Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic Dune (1965) in the Japanese giant robot animated series Gundam (1979).
A major character in the Dune story is Atreides family doctor Wellington Yueh.
The main protagonist of the 1995 Gundam Wing series is Heero Yuy (different spelling, similar pronunciation).
In the 1984 David Lynch Dune adaptation the gatling or vulcan style guns of the Sardaukar (seen at around 31 minutes with the arrival of Brad Dourif's character Piter De Vries) storm troops may be reflected in the similar cannon of the Gundam Wing mobile suit Heavy Arms.
Dean Stockwell who plays Dr. Yueh in the 1984 film was later in time travel TV series Quantum Leap (1989-1993) with actor Scott Bakula.
Bakula played Captain Archer in the Star Trek Enterprise TV series (2001-2005).
In previous videos I noted some harder to explain visual similarities between the Gundam 1979 animated series and Star Trek The Original Series (1966-1969).
In the 1968 TOS episode Patterns Of Force a warring alien planet is named ZEON, the same name as the enemy nation on Earth in Gundam. The freedom / resistance fighter Isak in Patterns Of Force may aesthetically bear some resemblance Gundam hero Amuro Ray.
In the 1967 Star Trek TOS episode Metamorphosis part of the outisde of the house engineer / scientist Zefram Cochrane may resemble the shield of the Gundam RX-78 mecha. In the interior of Cochrane's house there is some avionics or spacecraft instrumentation / hardware on a table. The cockpits of the Gundam fighting machines in the animation are regularly depicted, highly technical resembling those of aircraft.
