Yes yes, I know that tutorials are boring and we should get straight into the action. But after Omega, I might be better off becoming re-acquainted with "normal" controls, so here we are! It looks like the other sections will be the interesting parts, anyway.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is derived from "Linley's Dungeon Crawl" (usually known simply as "Crawl") which began development as early as 1995 (released in 1997) and, at the time, was seen as a fresh breath of air compared to the older classics of the time. The introduction of an experience pool and central deity themes expanded the genre, affecting other roguelikes along the way. Development mostly stopped around 2001, at which point the Stone Soup variant (commonly nicknamed "DCSS") began with its own development and continues them to this day, keeping to the Crawl format but focusing greatly on maintaining a smooth (albeit tall) difficulty curve and providing a challenging but almost always possible path to victory.

The amazing thing about DCSS is that it still contains a great deal of very classical elements that easily remind you of previous titles: potions to drink, cursed equipment, plenty of magic that is accessible to anyone with the proper training. At the same time, however, there are oodles of subtle but far-reaching modifications to each case that have dramatic effects on the game's dynamic. They'll show themselves over time, but for now we look at how to simply play the game at all.
