So here is your proof...

...I had no idea that that cream puff was Darces. I mean, to put it nicely, I thought he was just a somewhat larger freak in the mix. I guess I was thinking that the game would stage all these pre-climactic showdowns and then maybe end with either a showdown with Darces on the lowest level and then save the day, or actually hoping that I would save the king, then afterward go and find Darces. But that obviously didn't happen.

And as proof that I didn't know it was the end or that Darces was offed, well, you can see that after, um, offing him, I went to restock potions then back at it. Well, I wouldn't have had to if I had known that was the end.
