Dungeons 3 is a management sim combined with a real time strategy game. In addition to the interesting combination of genres, it is dripping with satire of other popular games and topics of the era such as Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, etc. Behind the humor is a very competent and enjoyable strategy game.
Dungeons 3 has two distinct areas of game play. The first is a management sim where you operate and take care of your dungeon. The game play here is purely macro oriented instead of micro. You issue commands to your minions to harvest resources, clear out land to build rooms, hire troops, and etc. Like any good management sim, you have to build and organize your dungeon efficiently to satisfy the basic needs of your minions, which include food and sleep.
The second phase of the game is taking your troops above ground into the overworld. Here the game feels like a much more traditional real time strategy game where building a good team composition and successfully micromanaging your units will lead to a much easier victory.
As you travel into the overworld, heroes are constantly raiding your dungeon. They will not only attack everything and everyone, they will gladly steal any gold lying out in the open. This requires careful consideration when laying out the floor plan of your dungeon as well as smart usage of traps.
This requires consideration of many facets of running a successful dungeon and learning the ebb and flow of both the management side as well as the combat leads to a sometimes hectic but completely satisfying experience.
