Recently I visited to my local Target to see if I could score a few of the new Dungeons & Dragons LEGO Minis. When I saw the pathetic little Dungeons & Dragons section I remembered that it was D&D's 50th Anniversary and was compelled to film.
DnD has been moved from the Board Games sections and given it's "own space" in the Toy Aisle. It's very messy. There are a couple of Basic-style boxed sets, a battle-map book, a coloring book, a novel, and some plastic miniatures. Despite several different types of figures being available from brands like Super7, I could only find a single action figure, the excellent Zarak Evil Half-Orc Assassin.
Sadly, my quest was a bust, I found zero LEGO Minis. There were 2 empty boxes, in the wrong spots I might add, but they were both completely ravaged. At least they had cool art.
I can remember a dark time when D&D was not very popular with the general public and would never have even gotten a space like this but it's really popular now, right? With Hasbro controlling the Toy Section you'd thing they'd be able to muster a better showing for their major products 50th anniversary. You'd think Target visibility would be a good gateway for untapped players but maybe they are full on digital all the way now.
