The "table test" or "furniture test" is an essential tool for confirming that the floor of any new, unpredictable dig site (like a cavern) can be safely accessed by your workers. It's important to check because otherwise you will notice miners getting trapped and dying of dehydration in unreachable nooks of some dwarf-forsaken rock.

If your dwarves can find a path between a stockpile with furniture and a given spot, they will play furniture without error. If there is no path to a given area, the game will not allow furniture placement. Using this is a way to "ping" the map and confirm whether a given spot is accessible or inaccessible by dwarves. This is a useful diagnostic to confirm a scenario in which miners have become trapped from returning to the surface.
