Many a dwarf will turn to coal or charcoal for such things, burning twigs, fosilised or otherwise, to turn ore to metal
Real dwarfs turn to the blood of the Earth, magma - from which Dwarfs (with their thermodynamics bending physics) can extract a near infinite amount of energy to power the fires on industry.
In this episode, I retrieve magma from the magma sea, and lift it up to our fort to get the steel forges burning.
The elves come to visit, and for now we smile...we are a noble band after all. But eventually, we suspect, they will resent our progress. And at that time...we will need steel in hand.
