I really like the series, I really do. I have not played all the games, have not tried all the "Orochi" and "Samurai" installments, but I for sure may state that I enjoy this kind of gameplay. The seemingly monotonous button mashing is very satisfying, I havent seen a game where you can take part in huge battles and single-handedly wipe out thousands of enemies along crazy metal soundtrack (of course there are games like Kingdom Under Fire, but none of them seemed SO dynamic). That is why I felt the hype once I heard about the open world in the newest installment. Then I read the reviews on Steam... "mostly negative". Then I saw the price and the number of DLCs. All that discouraged me from buying the game.
Some months later, I learned that the devs introduced a trial mode that is pretty generous as to the content you can test. I installed it immediately and... delved into the game world for 3 hours. Okay, you have a battle trial, which allows you to fight one battle with a limited set of characters to choose from (and after meeting certain conditions you get 500k gold for the main game). You can try the online feature (did not work for me) and choose up to 3 generals to test their story. I don't know whether I did something wrong but the story mode ended after I finished like 3 short quests, a prompt appeared saying that that was all for the trial version. Slightly disappointed, I restarted the game with the same character (Cao Cao) and instead of doing the quests, I went on trying to check the boundaries of the map in the trial. There are none. You can explore the whole map and let me tell you: it is HUGE! After 3 hours, I think I barely just scratched its surface.
Now for my general opinion - I had a great time playing this trial and it convinced me to buy the game (the bundles available on Steam offer all the character dlcs and some major dlcs at prices 10 times lower than prices of individual dlcs, no logic at all...). The gameplay is nothing else you should expect from a Dynasty Warriors game: slashing your way through whole garrisons of goons and lieutenants + new elements like crafting, fishing, side-quests (favors), hideout system, exploration, animal hunting. All of that is pretty simplified and generic, but that's, in my opinion, satisfying enough to have fun with the game. The music is great and atmospheric, the graphics good enough, the gameplay itself fluent. I don't mind the emptiness of the world, it is a huge map so it seems natural that finding anything of interest needs time (and, thus, it is more satisfying to find a cluster of raw materials or a purchaseable hideout in the mountains). I really do not understand the negative uproar this game caused (yet I do understand, since every time a dev tries something new with a popular series, the old fans butcher the new title with negative reviews).
To sum up, if you consider buying the game, try out the trial. It's extensive enough to offer you maybe even a dozen hours of undemanding fun. Namely, this game is for you if:
- you look for casual action to simply relax,
- want a huge world to explore and fight in (the best I think is to compare the style of the world in DW9 to an Asian MMORPG like Perfect World),
- want pretty complex but not overwhelming mechanics like crafting, companion system, etc.
This game is NOT for you if:
- you expect complicated boss battles and complex combat,
- expect a dense and diversified game world with POIs at every corner,
- expect the game to be as deep as, e.g. Monster Hunter.
Do not jump on the band wagon with raging fans, try the game for yourself for free!
