EA reveal cross-play and cross-progression details for Battlefield 2042
‘Battlefield 2042’ will have cross-play and cross-progression, EA has confirmed.
In a new blog post called the ‘Battlefield Briefing’ – which aimed to answer fan questions about the upcoming first-person shooter – publisher Electronic Arts revealed that one of the most frequently asked questions was about cross-play.
They continued to reveal that cross-play is a function that they’re “looking to build and test for Battlefield 2042” and they will be having a “Technical Playtest later this summer” to test the cross-play functionality.
They note that a “few thousand participants” will end up testing Battlefield 2042’s new features but state that the “Technical Playtest is purposefully not intended to be the full experience you will see in the Open Beta, or at launch. It is a development-led environment with only a subset of features, focused on technical performance.”
In order for players to participate in the Playtest, which will be under strict NDA, they will need to register for an EA playtesting profile and will then be in with a chance of being selected to join.
Revealing details of how cross-play will work, EA note that PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PS5 consoles will be grouped together, whilst noting that PC and console players can opt-out from playing together if they choose, and Xbox One and PS4 players will be able to play together.
The reasoning behind the split comes down to the difference in player-count between new-gen and last-gen versions of Battlefield 2042, next-gen versions will be able to support up to 128 player matches, while last-gen will only be up to 64 players.
Elsewhere in the post, EA revealed that alongside cross-play, they’re also “building cross-progression and cross-commerce for Battlefield 2042, which will be shared across all platforms and travel with you wherever you go.”
