Does charging activity start and stop when you wave the wire to indicate that the connection is a bit loose? If so, this video offers a free and easy-to-do solution.

First of all, especially with iPhones that spend a lot of time in fluffy pockets or purses, make sure there is no lint or dirt inside the small hole where you connect the charging wire. Try blowing into the hole or fishing very gently inside with a toothpick or plastic tie to remove any collected foreign matter.
