a little bug with the ladder code makes it easy to mine straight down!
by holding shift at the bottom of a ladder you can mine normally without the normal movement penalty.

this movement penalty affects players when they are in boats, minecarts, on top of mobs, underwater (unless you have enchantments ), riding a pig, and riding a horse. I may have missed a few but you will come across it in-game at some point in time.
