"Ebenezer and the Invisible World" Demo | NextFest June 2023
7A metroidvania based on the literary works of Charles Dickens? Sure, why not! I have a unique relationship with "A Christmas Carol" as an English teacher — I've read the novella many times for pleasure, and taught it several times for the English Literature GCSE here in the UK. I enjoy it.
That being said, my critiques of the game are both to do with the storytelling and its presentation.
1) The font choice in places is not great for readability.
2) The intro has far FAAAAAR too much reading for an action exploration game. A lot of people will just skip it. I think it was like 8 minutes or something?!
Gameplay wise, however, it seems to have some interesting systems. I like the cane grab on ledges. I think having to press UP to pick up drops every time will become very annoying quickly, however.
