Presented at EclipseCon 2023 in Ludwigsburg, Germany by Johannes Matheis (Vector Informatik GmbH), Heiko Klare (Vector Informatik GmbH), Mark Goodchild (Renesas Electronics Corporation) and Sebastian Ratz (SAP SE).

For decades, the Eclipse IDE has long been a valuable asset for developers. However, in recent years, we have seen a decline in its prominence as new technologies emerge and closed ecosystems gain traction.

The ongoing transformation of the software development ecosystem presents a crucial challenge for Eclipse: it must stay competitive and relevant to ensure its survival. As the last major independent and vendor-neutral platform, Eclipse plays a vital role in providing an alternative to closed, siloed tech stacks that can come with higher costs and may not always serve the best interests of their users. If Eclipse fails to maintain its edge, end users could be left with fewer choices and greater dependence on big tech companies.

Our presentation will delve into the developments, trends and challenges that impact the Eclipse IDE (such as AI integration, adjusted UI/UX experience and web technologies). We will explore and discuss the current achievements, strategies, and priorities of the members of the Eclipse IDE WG.
