Effective Altruism | Adriano Mannino | Talks at Google
Adriano Mannino, philosopher, writer and entrepreneur: he’s helped launch the EA movement in the German-speaking area, and is the former president of the Effective Altruism Foundation (www.ea-stiftung.org) and a co-founder of Datacareer (www.datacareer.ch), presented on how Effective Altruism (EA) is a philosophy and social movement that applies reason and scientific evidence to determine the most cost-effective ways to benefit others. When we invest money or time for personal profit, trying to calculate the expected returns is standard practice — but doing the same in philanthropy is a novel approach. EA offers a variety of data-driven insights, from the irrelevance of the "overhead ratio" in charity to the top interventions against extreme poverty, the most neglected risks of global catastrophe, or the most impactful ways to use the 80,000 hours we each have in our career.
