One of the greatest 4X turn-based strategy games ever created. Interesting factions with distinct differences in belief systems and skills, well-developed skill / knowledge trees, a variety of options for customizing play style, engaging campaigns and multiplayer -- it's a feature-complete game that is the gold standard for the genre.
It has a bit of a steep learning curve but has lots of tutorials for those who are new to the game or genre.
