111The HBO adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider starts with police detective Ralph Anderson, played by Ben Mendelsohn, finding himself in quite a spot because of the case of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson, whose mutilated body appears in the woods of rural Georgia. At first, the trail seems straightforward. Multiple eyewitnesses see local Little League coach Terry Maitland with the boy before and after the murder. DNA evidence and witness statements leave no doubt, at least on paper. But the show does more than present a crime. It drags us into a supernatural nightmare, where an ancient entity known as El Cuco feeds on young people and the misery that follows, leaving a trail of shattered families in its wake.
