Short lasting fun, not too good against smaller and faster enemies but very effective against large and slow ships especially combined with ramming. Overheating is a problem if you fire too often so heat sinks are useful and because of railgun high power consumption you wont be able to have best shields, far from it.
But for fast hit and run railguns can be used because they are thermal and kinetic weapon same time meaning that railguns are good against shields and hull.
And rail guns have no or very little damage penalty so even small/medium railguns are very effective against medium/large ship hull.
