Elysion - Overworld theme 2 (Famicom)
I really like this. It's catchy. This is the second overworld theme which will play after you get the Hero's Ring from the castle basement, fulfilling the game's first quest. I like this better than the first overworld theme. Although that one has a very nostalgic RPG feel. The second theme sounds like it would work nicely in a desert setting.
Elysion is a Japanese exclusive action RPG that has roguelike elements. But there is an English patch out there if. The game was developed by NEC Interchannel (responsible for the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 and the PC-Engine CD-ROM2/Turbo CD) and published by Tokyo Shoseki in 1988. It's fun if you like your ARPGs a bit slow and grindy. The palettes are a bit garish in places and they actually change depending on whether you pick a male or female character. In fact, the overworld actually changes a bit. For male characters you'll get yellow ground and green trees. And for female characters you'll get pink ground and orange flowers. An interesting feature for such an old game to have.
Each character is a different class and race and there are four to choose from. The one in the video is the Aylex, which is a maze. Additionally there is the Minos (warrior), Dionea (archer) and Viskam (warrior/mage hybrid). They can all equip any weapon. But weight restrictions dictate what they can actually use. Especially in the beginning. But the weight system is pretty well done and isn't really cumbersome.
The graphics feel a bit primitive for 1988. But back then a lot of RPGs looked less spectacular than other genres anyway. Small, squashed sprites were the norm. I kind of miss them. Nostalgic.
