What Is a Phishing Email?

A phishing email is a fraudulent email sent from someone you think is a verified source, such as a bank or friend. Instead, it is actually someone trying to fool you. Their goal is to trick you into providing them with your account information. 

Recognize Phishing Emails
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Phishing emails usually contain a link within the email that will urgently encourage you to click on it. They may tell you that something bad will happen to your account if you don't click the link right away. 

* Hover over the provided link and examine whether it looks legitimate or not. More often than not, phishing emails will use a website address that closely resembles a legitimate one. Once you view the website, you can try looking it up on an internet search engine to determine if it is a legitimate source or a scam website. 

Legitimate emails from banks often contain images to verify their authenticity. Some phishing emails may contain phony pictures that claim to be authentic. If you're unsure whether the email is authentic or not, contact your bank to verify the email. 

* Phishing emails often contain spelling errors in the text of the email. 

* When you create new accounts online with legitimate sources, they usually state that they'll never ask for your password information. If you do receive an email requesting this information, it's a good sign that the email is fraudulent.
