WHAT IS PLANK?
Plank is meant to be the simplest dock on the planet. The goal is to provide just what a dock needs and absolutely nothing more. It is, however, a library which can be extended to create other dock programs with more advanced features.

SLOW AUTOSTART ISSUE
If your autostart applications are taking forever to launch, try to edit /etc/xdg/autostart/plank.desktop. Comment out / remove the following line :
# X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=Panel
Save and restart the system to apply the changes. Big thanks to u/JonathanChun.
REVERT / UNINSTALL
You can always revert the changes by running these commands (from the Terminal of course) :
sudo make uninstall
sudo apt-get install --reinstall plank libplank*
