ENCANTO | Mirabel Shot Progression #shots
214Howdy ya'll! I got approval to show some shots I did on @encantomovie over at @disneyanimation and I wanted to talk about my workflow. I'm grateful to have worked with the amazing @chadsellz who supervised this sequence.
Reference is key! It helped me understand the pacing at which Mirabel had to walk, so after recording a few takes of myself walking back and fourth, I picked one that made the most sense to me. I don't bring my video reference into Maya because I don't want to be tied too much to the reference. I do not retime my reference either because I feel like it's my job to figure it when I animate. I would only scrub the video and pay attention to what's going on with the weight, the pacing, the timing, etc. and try to mimic it while blocking.
In the blocking stage, I do not use stepped keys. When I use splines, I can tell immediately if the rotation orders are correct and I get a real sense of what's going on in screen space. Plus it helps me a lot with avoiding gimbal locks. But to help balance it out, I playblast on 2s, so the video can look like its on stepped keys. This helps my eye to check for spacing issues that would of been hidden within the splines. Because I splined the entire shot, I am already closer to getting the shot approved than if I only had story telling keys. Remember that blocking is a PROMISE to the director. If you can show your ideas off well, and have more frames to show it, the quicker you can get shots approved.
After addressing some director feedback, I just animate like normal and push for final polish so the Heads of Animation can approve it. Once they approve it, I work with my supervisor to make sure it's ready for final publish.
The final result is what we see at the end once it has gone through Tech Anim and Lighting. They are the real heroes who just plus up a shot to look even more amazing.
