30While on Encanto Movie, I was mostly animating crowd cycles. However the first sequence I was casted on was Mirabel meeting Bruno in his room, supervised by the super talented Alberto Abril. I had a run of four shots, all RATS 🐀 . I didn't shoot any reference for this and just animated what I thought would be entertaining. In the layout, the rats were just standing around doing nothing, so I wanted to add some life and do dumb stuff, like a rat rolling on the brush, biting a tooth brush, scratching themselves, fighting over cheese, etc. I also got to work with cool guy Ben Girmann who animated Mirabel and Bruno at the end. Sometimes in production more than one animator will work on the same shot. Whenever I had a rat update, I'd let him know so he could see them in his animation file. Luckily the tools we have made this process pretty simple to do!
In the blocking phase, I work mostly in spline and playblast on 2s so I can see if there are any spacing or timing issues. It's just faster than animating in stepped tangents. On the third shot there was a lot of debate on what should be going on in the pants. Do the rats come out of the pants? Are they already in the pants? What should they be doing? I figured they should be motivated by something, so I decided that they should fight over cheese. I found a cheese model in our data base and added it to the scene. The last shot was so heavy I had to work in chunks, working on just a few rats at a time so my file wouldn't crash and die (lesson learned).
In the spline phase I was fortunate to get the blocking approved by the directors, so it was a matter of cleaning up my arcs, pushing the timing, pushing poses, and redoing animation for some of the rats. The directors liked the cheese fighting part, but the one note was to have the jumping rat push all the other rats down the pant leg, and the rat on the clothes line can catch the cheese. I threw in a rough ball animation so our Tech Anim team can see where they need to work their magic later.
The final result is where Tech Anim animated the brush bristles and pants, and the Lighting team making the final image beautiful 😍 .
