Encased - Sci-Fi Post Apocalyptic RPG - First Impressions
There is a new isometric RPG in town and it has potential, ladies and gentlemen.
Hey everyone this is Thyworm and today, I want to give my first impressions on Encased, after completing the Prologue, which is currently all the content that is available in this Early Access game.
I’m a big fan of isometric turn-based RPGs. I spent a lot of time on those games when they were popular, around the end of the 90’s, with games like Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights. Back when BioWare knew what they were doing. The main perks of the genre have always been, for me at least, a great deal of storytelling, interesting characters, choices that matter and a living, breathing world. Those features made everything very immersive.
Just like BioWare, the isometric RPG genre these days, is only a shadow of what it used to be. The technological advances in the gaming industry paved the way for other genres to shine, with graphical splendour mostly, but also often a hollow core. Every now and then however, a great isometric RPG takes centre stage, pretty often backed by a kickstarter project. Pillars of Eternity comes to mind, which I played all the way through. Also Wasteland 2 saw the light of day because of a generous community.
For Encased, it’s no different. Almost 3000 backers made this possible. Even better, after playing the story Encased currently has to offer, I can safely say that there are much more similarities between Encased and its spiritual predecessors. That’s a good thing. Encased could be really, really good, and here’s why.
