I kind of think a defensive science civ is really boring actually since you just sort of hit end turn until you win since the AI can't really stop you and you win by sitting still, but I know it's a popular style of play in these kinds of games. I think this sort of focus on just getting a few really good colonies is the best way to play these guys and I like that they get away with building a little bit taller than most factions.
