Clash of the Rogues- Arcane Trickster Vs The Assassin| D&D Discussions
This Dungeon Master had an interesting encounter with an assassin rogue npc came up in their game and they wanted our opinion on how we would of handled it. So we discuss the face off between the two different rogue archetypes in 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons. Both the assassin and the arcane trickster have a lock picking battle from across a hallway with an air elemental in between them during and encounter.

Last session I had an argument with the Rogue of the group. The situation was:
The party was in a 10ft wide, 50ft long corridor. At the end of the corridor there was a door that lead to a merchant´s room. An assassin was trying to pick the lock to enter the room. The players had to stop him. The problem they had was an Air Elemental blocking the path. I put them on the clock. Every turn I made a Dex roll (Thieve´s Tools) for the assassin to see if he could pick the lock. If he failed, the players had one more turn to try and defeat the elemental and get to the real enemy.
One of the player´s characters was a Rogue (Arcane Trickster). He wanted to gain time, so he asked me if he could use his Mage Hand to do one of these actions:
1-) He wanted to use his Mage Hand to steal the Assassin sheathed weapons, so he would be disarmed. He wanted to do this, if possible, without the assassin noticing.
2-) He wanted to use his Mage Hand to give Disadvantage on the next Dex roll of the assassin do pick the lock.
For the first question, I answered that he could, but the DC would be the Passive Perception of the Assassin plus 5, because he would have advantage. They are in a combat situation, and the Assassin is aware of his surrounding. The player didn´t like this. He thought I was making the check harder than it should be.
For the second question, I answered no. For me the Arcane Trickster Mage Hand, as written, is supposed to allow the Rogue to use his Sleigh of Hands and Thieve´s Tools skills at a distance and not to impose Disadvantages on enemy´s skill checks. The player also didn´t like this.
After the game session we had a long discussion and the player said that he thinks I am nerfing his character. I don´t think so, but maybe I am wrong. If you guys can comment on my decisions I would be glad. Thansks!
