In the good old days, after getting a box of new disks, it was quite common to run the Check Disk program on them after they were formatted, to ensure that they were good lest we risk losing valuable data. Stores were pretty good about exchanging defective right out of the box disks. Re-formatting was also a potential fix...this program was something best left to run over night...
