Error Writing Value's New Contents on Registry-How to Fix on Windows 10 [Tutorial]

Occasionally, though, you will run into a Registry key or value that you don’t have permission to edit. When you try, you’ll see an error message saying “Cannot edit _____: Error writing the value’s new contents.” Fortunately, just like in the Windows file system, the Registry provides tools that let you take ownership of and edit permissions for keys. Here’s how to do it.

The Windows Registry is a critical and essential part of the Windows operating system and stores low-level settings for both the OS and the applications, such as device drivers, services, security settings, and so on. It is intended for advanced and experienced users to modify the system especially when there is no other way to do it, because modifying Windows Registry may cause your Windows system not to operate and even crash. Therefore, normal users are not encouraged to touch the Windows Registry, and if they must, then it is highly recommended to backup the whole Windows Registry before any modification.

Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. So there’s a reason some of these Registry keys are protected. Editing a protected key can sometimes mess up Windows or the app the key relates to. Definitely back up the Registry (and your computer!) before making changes.

In Registry Editor, right-click the key that you can’t edit (or the key that contains the value you can’t edit) and then choose “Permissions” from the context menu.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 operating system (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, and Samsung.
