Ever 17: The Out of Infinity - Opening Intro
The opening intro / video to the visual novel game "Ever 17: The Out of Infinity", extracted from the Microsoft Windows version.
This was the first visual novel I played--which was only because I got it for free during some sort of discount/promo sale on a visual novel website. I have only reached one bad ending so far, so I have to play this again sometime in the future to get the good end.
There were tough decisions I had to make when I converted this video before uploading. First, the source video was encoded as a 640x480 (VGA) MPEG-1 video, and when the game is started in full screen, the screen resolution seems to be set to somewhere around 800x600 (SVGA) (I cannot confirm, but I am sure that it is higher than 640x480). The opening video is scaled to 800x600 without any interpolation (nearest neighbor). However, since I want to upload in the highest possible resolution while preserving the original quality of the video, I was a bit concerned about uploading the video in 4K without any interpolation. First, the video is not pixel art in any way, and is made with antialiased smooth curves. Scaling this without interpolation just makes it look worse. In the end, I decided to use Lanczos interpolation during scaling to 4K.
Just to reiterate: this is scaled from 640x480 to 4K with Lanczos interpolation, from 29.97 FPS to 59.94 FPS but there is NO "AI" framerate smoothening, and there is NO "AI" resolution enhancer or anything. The main reason for me uploading in 60FPS 4K is not to "enhance the video quality"--that's impossible. But I want to have control over how the video is interpolated and displayed on YOUR screen. This way, I can use Lanczos interpolation (or nearest neighbor in most cases) when you view the video, and not let YouTube use whatever scaling method it uses when the video is displayed on your screen. Also, as a bonus, uploading video in high resolutions (like 4K) delivers the video in higher bitrates to your browser, which means it is less likely for the video quality to degrade further than the original, and you can watch it in almost exactly the same video quality as the original file as extracted from the game data.
