EQ2 launched right around the same time as Glizzard Entertainment's World of WoWcraft, but unlike that game with its babygame cartoon graphics it had big boy high detail cutting edge single threaded rendered experiences.

They immediately started to reconfigure the game to be more like WoW by doing things like optimizing the game so people could actually play it on their mid-2000s Dells. Unfortunately that meant eventually excising the geometric water surface deformation, cloth physics, particle physics hell, foliage deformation, and 90s CGI looking stencil shadows. They also ruined all the animations by turning up movement speed, especially the smaller races like Ratonga. Here they all are again though, Digital Foundry Unoptimized Settings with things like high quality models, effect layering, and lighting distance turned up to unreasonable levels. The 2004 era code does not show mercy to modern CPUs, even at 1024x768 my 7700X is humbled.

Using the eq2emu servers. At the time I only played the Trial of The Isle demo so this is very nostalgic. Hot Rats.
