EVERY TIME I Cover This Band I GET KILLED-Even Though It's #1 Rock Song of 80s!--Professor of Rock
Coming up next, the story of one of the three most played rock songs in history: Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer. It was a #1 smash in the 80s, and Jon Bon Jovi wanted to give the song away. He didn’t think it was strong enough for the album until he was convinced it was Great. I have the song's co-writer, Desmond Child, with me today, who happens to be one of the most successful writers ever. Today, Desmond tells the story of several #1 hits he wrote with Bon Jovi, including the song You Give Love a Bad Name, which he wrote for an iconic female singer who had a hit with it in other countries but not in America. He knew the song was special, so he took it and put new lyrics over it and turned it into a rock song. And it became a smash… It’s coming up next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another episode of our series Revelations, where featured artists reveal rare stories about their greatest songs. So today I have Desmon Child on the show, who’s written so many hits it’s hard to keep track. Here’s a quick preview.
So when He co-wrote 2 #1 rock classics that put Bon Jovi on the map and made them the #1 band of the late 80s in terms of sales. They wrote them in Ritchie Sambora’s mom’s basement! And in fact, John Bon Jovi initially didn’t think Living on a Prayer was strong enough and almost gave it away. Then there was the vocal that he nailed in the studio but could never quite be replicated again. Prayer has become one of the biggest songs ever. Even now, it’s a contender for most played rock song ever, and then there’s You Give Love Bad Name.
It was initially written as a disco-type song called "If I were a woman and you were a man…" It actually hit #6 in France, but stalled at #77 here in America. Desmond knew the song was better than that. So get this. He took the song and rewrote new lyrics to it, and made the song rock, and a few months later, Bon Jovi made it a #1 hit. Up next, Desmond tells us these stories and more, including three songs he wrote for Bon Jovi and one that they turned down, and then a female icon stitched it up and made it a hit, and she ended up marrying one of the members of Bon Jovi. The story is next on Professor of Rock.
Man, Slippery When Wet was so big! It was the soundtrack of for about a year of my life as an 80s kid, from wrestling on the trampoline to raising hell in the neighborhood. This cassette didn’t leave my boombox for a year. My dad used to call them Ron Bovi. So funny. Hey, turn down the Ron Bovi music. Leave us a comment.
