I made this silly parody about it, but it is a real problem. Character assassination, witch hunt, mob mentality, and internet shaming are the most common words for it. Usually the attacker will use screenshots to "prove" an artist did something bad, then spread it around. The more people who repost and talk about it, the more the drama grows. Ultimately the artist's career and reputation are permanently harmed, they may be fired if they hold a studio position, and their inbox is flooded with hate mail and death threats. All over something taken out of context.
If you are the target of an internet mob (you'll know because you will wake up to angry messages from many people, not just one):
▪ Save evidence of the harassment and who is doing it.
▪ After you’ve saved it, do what you can to have harassment deleted ASAP. If you do nothing it will spread even more.
▪ Do NOT engage or try to talk with the attackers. The more you talk, the worse things will get.
▪ Spend time with friends who care about you.
▪ Keep posting your regular art/content.
▪ It sucks, but even many years later the same posts can resurface and you have to do this all over again.
