Evoland is a role-playing video game developed by Shiro Games. A sequel called Evoland 2 was released. The two games were packaged together as Evoland Legendary Edition.
Evoland 1
Evoland is based on the concept of tracing the evolution of video games. When the game begins, there are only four colors, simple pixelated graphics, and a 2D character. Through the adventure, the player gradually unlocks new graphics, new technologies and new gameplay until reaching the HD age and a three-dimensional world. This evolution in-game of video game history is punctuated by many references to classic role-playing games and movies.
The game alternates between action RPG phases similar to The Legend of Zelda and Active-Time Battles like those seen in Final Fantasy. The character moves in a world made up of dungeons, caverns, forests and villages full of NPCs. Players collect the in-game currency Glis after each battle, which can be spent in towns to purchase additional items and upgrades, many of which must be obtained to finish the game. In addition to completing the story mode, players can also attempt to find hidden stars and cards that are scattered around the game world, the latter of which can be used in a collectible card game based on "Triple Triad" from Final Fantasy VIII.
Evoland 2
Evoland 2 A Slight Case of Spacetime Continuum Disorder is the sequel to the original Evoland, with its graphics style similarly changing as the player travels through time and its varied gameplay styles being revealed as the player moves along the storyline. The scenario is based on time travel and different gameplay styles that are linked to the story and the player's actions. These gameplay styles pay homage to older games that inspired the developers. The game also features a stronger emphasis on narrative than the first.
The player controls Kuro, an amnesiac boy who is found by a girl named Fina. The two travel together and meet different characters, including the demon prince Menos and researcher Velvet, with the ultimate goal of preventing the world's destruction and the end of time itself. Using relics known as Magiliths, Kuro and his party can travel between four different time periods, including the present day, a past war, a dystopian future, and the era of an ancient civilization. Each historical setting is rendered in its own graphical art style, including Game Boy graphics, 8-bit graphics, 16-bit graphics and 3D graphics. By jumping through time, players can change events in the past to alter history and affect the world in the future.
The majority of the game's fighting system revolves around real-time fighting from a top-down angle. The game will often shift to new genres of play at predetermined points in the story, such as a sidescrolling platform game, a match-3 puzzle game, a turn-based role-playing game, a vertically-scrolling shooting game, and a 2D fighting game. During the story campaign, players can also attempt to find hidden items scattered around the game world, such as Maana or Orikon Ore to upgrade Kuro and his party, and stars that act as bonus collectibles. Additionally, there is a minigame involving cards that one can play as a sidequest, with players able to collect new cards by finding them in chests and winning them from opponents.
Evoland Legendary Edition is available on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and PC (Steam & GOG). It will most likely be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X & S
