2021-10-20. Pretty cool retro feel, obviously based off of Star Fox. I got Space Harrier vibes from the tiled floor, but nothing in the game is based off of Space Harrier. Space Harrier has crisp, no acceleration controls, where the 3D aiming problem was solved elegantly and effortless to the gamer, back in the mid-1980's. This appears to be something most rail shooters don't know how to solve, and invent (otherwise cool) lock-on and missile fire. Ex-Zodiac has the same flaws; the controls are based off of Star Fox, which has lots of acceleration, no quick motion, and the aiming is also accelerated-controlled, making it hard to aim at anything. I tried to change the Invert-Y back and forth (you can see the major problem with not having a game architecture that allows the options screen during gameplay -- look at the turn around time to test varying controls! Ouch!), and it didn't help. Invert (airplane mode) default was actually the best, but you just cannot control the aiming. If you're making a 3D rail shooter, you need to sit down and look at what made Space Harrier effortless. Hints: 1. large player bullets, 2. where you aim in 2D is where you aim in 3D. However, I think the Star Fox style of gameplay can work, but needs some tweaking. If this can be handled, this game is going to rock. The graphics are awesome, the bosses are cool. Collision detection and messaging really needs some work. The pixel fonts are wicked. The single color polys and dithering look is awesome. The frame rate limitation should be removed (I'm rocking 240 Hz monitor here!). Can't wait to see what the developers churn out. I hope they are really iterating in gameplay & control.
