While never a huge seller, and its last entry in the series is almost 20 years old, Clock Tower plays an important role in the foundations of survival horror and how it evolved.
Clock Tower beat Resident Evil to the market by a few months.
Its focus on hiding and escaping from pursuers has made its way into many other titles, from the
heavy hitters in the genre from Resident Evil to numerous indie titles.
Its first release in 1995, back when this type of game was mostly unexplored territory, got so much right, with its atmosphere aging very well.
It's unfortunate its point-and-click design approach would work against the future titles in the series. When it did escape that mold, the resulting title, while enjoyable and charming, did lose a lot of that atmosphere that made the original title so special. It also goes way out there and in so many disjointed directions, and yet I can't help but respect it.
Sadly, the series has been dormant since the early 2000s, although it has had spiritual successors like Haunting Ground which took the Clock Tower formula and enhanced it.
In this video, we'll look at the four Clock Tower titles: Clock Tower, Clock Tower 2, Clock Tower: Ghost Head, and Clock Tower 3.
