I beat both novice and expert arena with just the maul/sledgehammer.
The advantages:
- Extremely high damage spike, armor piercing damage. Causes a lot of red damage and blood to spray out.
- Does damage on contact, even low velocity hits take hitpoints off.
- Seems to break some weaker blocks, or at least leak damage through some bad blocks.
-Best overhead strike in the game.
-Knocks enemies down regularly.

Cons:
- Slow attack speed. Easily blocked. Fast weapons are a nightmare.
- Slow Block speed. Totally helpless against stabs, semi-useful against swings.
- Awful recovery time, so slow that often enemies can recover from being hit faster than you can swing a second time.
- Crappy leg sweep, slow and too low, hard to connect.
-Awful against shields, has no shield-breaking ability. Can leak damage through a shield but swings too slow to actually make use of this property.
-Bad thrust, only good for taking off the last 5% of health, nothing more.
