Sonic the Hedgehog was originally created as part of a competition at Sega to create a new mascot to rival Mario. Under the guidance of Yuji Naka, the now-legendary Sonic Team was formed, and the resulting game, Sonic the Hedgehog, became a worldwide hit. It featured a blue hedghog with 90s attitude on a quest to thwart his nemesis, the evil Doctor Robotnik. Sega rocketed to prominence in the early 90s, with sales of the Mega Drive / Genesis giving them a commanding market share in the games industry. The success kept coming with sequels like Sonic the Hedghog 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. There was also slew of other Sonic-related media, including Sonic the Comic, books, the 'Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog' cartoon, and the SatAM cartoons. Sonic was briefly more recognizable than Mickey Mouse himself!

Sonic made the transition to 3D on the Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure, and a new cartoon, Sonic X, was released, but the series was gradually losing its way. (*Cough cough* Eggman.) By the release of 'Shadow the Hedgehog', most of what made the original games great had been lost.

2006 was to be a landmark year for the franchise, celebrating its 15th Anniversary, and restoring Sonic's flagging fortunes with a standout game. Instead, a combination of bad ideas, bad execution and terrible storylines made Sonic 2006 one of the most disappointing games ever. It didn't help that the game was rushed for a Christmas 2006 release.

Next came Sonic Unleashed, which began Sonic's slow and painful road to recovery. The game featured a brand-new engine that brought fun, fast Sonic levels, but most of the game involved a shoddy God of War ripoff, with Sonic flailing his elastic arms around as a nonsensical werehog.

Sonic Colors on the Wii took further steps in the right direction, before Sega finally got it right with Sonic Generations in 2012, just in time to celebrate the Hedgehog's 20th Anniversary.

But let's not think about the good times, it's time to see Sonic's foulest hour, in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006!
