The other day, while scrolling through Twitter, I stumbled upon a post celebrating Katsuhiro Otomo's birthday. Happy belated birthday, Mr. Otomo!
But amidst the birthday wishes, there was one particular detail that grabbed my attention: news about Sunrise embarking on a new Akira adaptation. What?! A new Akira? For those uninitiated, Akira stands as a pivotal anime from the 80s. If you haven't experienced it yet, what are you waiting for? Its iconic imagery has permeated countless IPs.
Strangely enough, this announcement slipped under my radar, despite being revealed back in 2019 alongside other projects like Orbital Era and Otomo: The Complete Works. Personally, I'm thrilled about the prospect of a new Akira adaptation. The original film, though groundbreaking, only scratches the surface of Otomo's sprawling manga. It merely covers the first half of the first volume and the last half of the last one. That's five volumes' worth of material left untouched, not to mention the tweaks made from manga to film.
As someone who cherishes both the manga and the film, a more faithful adaptation would be a dream come true.
