Explaining EVERY DROID Type in Star Wars
Star wars is absolutely filled with classic iconography, each able to powerfully bring the mind back to the brand. Lightsabers, Jedi, X Wings, TIE FIghters, Star Destroyers, the Death Star… Even Darth Vader is one of the most recognizable movie villains of all time. These icons are part of what make Star Wars feel the way it does, and so today I am here to talk about one of the most consistent and stable icons in the entire franchise: droids.
While at first glance droids may appear to be just another sci-fi robot trope, droids are actually really interesting. I’ve actually been working on a project for a long time now entitled “how to properly write a droid character” because it’s not as intuitive as you may think. A droid, for example, behaves very differently from, let’s say, an AI or VI from Mass Effect like EDI or the Geth. The mentality required to write them is actually very specific, like lightning in a bottle, and getting it wrong is why some fan-fiction can feel… kind of like imitation leather. It’s just not quite there.
But that’s a video for another day. Today I am here to break down the six classifications of droids present in the Star Wars mythos. I started working on this video a few days ago and, I gotta say, even I was surprised at some of the stuff I found. As I Said, droid writing is pretty complex, and that’s in no small part thanks to the way droid classes impact that writing. So without further ado, let’s start with class 1 droids.
