Explore The Mun (Flyby) | KSP Contract Tutorials
The contract needs us to flyby The Mun, but we're going to step this up to a free return flyby and use the opportunity to talk in detail about maneuver nodes. (KSP 1.12.3)
Addendum: I mentioned that this vessel is capable of getting into Near Space above The Mun. One way to do that is to get a capture (the vessel just has enough dV to do that and still get home), but there is an easier option.
When setting up the burn for your flyby, adjust the timing so your periapsis with The Mun is low, say 20 km, and still on the same side of The Mun as in the video. Don't worry about the resulting orbit about Kerbin. When you enter The Mun's SOI, set up another maneuver at your periapsis with The Mun. Adjust prograde (yes, prograde) until the maneuver brings your periapsis with Kerbin down to 35 km. Collect all that High and Near Space science, perform the burn at The Mun's closest approach, and enjoy the ride home.
