Eyes Wide Shut: Hidden In Plain Sight (Chapter 3: MISE-EN-SCÈNE / MISE-EN-ABYME)
In this video, we dive into the concepts of mise-en-scène and mise-en-abyme, both critical to understanding Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. Kubrick meticulously designed every frame, using objects, set designs, and movement to enhance visual storytelling. The term mise-en-abyme, meaning “placing into the abyss”, refers to recursive storytelling—a key structure in Eyes Wide Shut, where reflections and mirroring create a layered narrative. This analysis reveals the film as an intricate web of symbols, themes, and visual repetitions that reflect Kubrick’s unparalleled craftsmanship.
This is a passion project of mine, inspired by an essay by Nik Dobrinsky. I’ve incorporated voices from FakeYou.com, created by Vegito1089, and added some artistic touches to make it more engaging—such as having a fictional HAL-9000 narrate the story, which will evolve as the series progresses. I hope there are no copyright issues, as I have no intention of monetizing this for personal gain. All rights belong to their original owners, including the essay by Nik Dobrinsky, which I’ve used as a basis for this narrative.
