F-Zero Playthrough

The main difference between F-Zero and Super Mario Kart has been in their approach. While Mario Kart is about having fun and creating a party atmosphere, F-Zero wants to go really damn fast. The illusion of speed is its main focal point and the series got off on the right foot with its debut. The futuristic space racer puts Mode 7 to great effect with courses that feel like what an F1 racecourse might look like if combined with a little Death Race 2000.
There are limited choices for drivers and no multiplayer, but they aren’t serious demerits. The game is too fast paced to really let those details get in the way. It is a lot of fun, too, but not easy in the slightest. Even on the lowest difficulty, you’re going to get a workout with an aggressive AI and tough courses that punish mistakes. It is generally fair, though the Death Wind courses aren’t a lot of fun because the course is constantly pushing you toward the wall. The drone NPC cars clogging up the race course can be problematic, as well.
Visually, the game isn’t much to look at. Mode 7 does its job and keeps things moving at a steady clip with almost no slowdown, which is the point. The soundtrack is first-rate and has been a general strength of the franchise. Some very memorable tunes including Silence, Port Town and of course, the iconic Mute City.
Racing fans not looking for some of the more arcade-style gimmicks of Mario Kart will appreciate F-Zero’s emphasis on skill and speed. Going fast is the name of the game and F-Zero does it remarkably well.
