Red Faction: Guerrilla Playthrough Part 1
2009, PS3, X360. Rating: 3 out of 4 stars
After a seven-year layoff, the Red Faction series came back with a sandbox-style game that allowed developer Volition to run wild with the Geo-Mod engine and its ability to create destructible environments. That is really the name of the game and it feels like Blast Corps for the Nintendo 64 at times. Giving the game a wider canvas and a more ambitious storyline works well for the game as it takes a look at what has happened since the original revolution against Ultor on Mars (the second game is largely glossed over).
Turns out: The EDF that liberated Mars in the original have become the oppressors and it’s time for a new war. Protagonist Alec Mason falls into the typical “fish out of water” trope as he is thrown into the war after his brother, a leader in the newly-formed Red Faction, is killed. The game has about 20 main missions and dozens of side missions that encourage chaos and destruction with your sledgehammer, explosives, and anything else you can think of. This is a key tenet of the game’s appeal and it works pretty well, by and large. Getting creative and even strategic with how you destroy things is pretty awesome.
The story, while ambitious, doesn’t do much to delve into the characters and not much time is spent on characterization. They have their general traits and the game works off that. It’s telling that Jenkins, an unhinged tertiary character you go on raids with, might be the most developed. The story is good, but there isn’t much soul behind it.
As with many sandbox games, there are plenty of bugs and weirdness going on and some can be an impediment. Guerrilla fares better than others, but some of the character movements and physics are pretty weird at times. Even with those hiccups, this is arguably the high-water mark of the franchise. The Geo-Mod engine got quite a workout in a game it was perfectly designed for.
