James Bond has always been the kind of franchise that lends itself to video games because of its action-focused stories. After three straight movie adaptations, EA decided to go the original route with Agent Under Fire. It has all the flourishes of the early 2000’s Bond with a lot of over-the-top action, gadgets and an insane plot. This one involves cloning, nuclear weapons, taking over the world and more than a few deus ex machinas thrown in for good measure. Try not to think too hard about this one. The voice actors are either stiff and wooden or foaming at the mouth if they’re a villain, which may be about right for a Bond game. Too bad none of the characters, save Zoe Nightshade, are memorable, and hers is almost for all the wrong reasons.

The game itself works at a decent clip with a nice of variety of first-person missions mixed with a couple of rail shooters and driving levels to keep the action varied. The AI isn’t especially smart and their damage meters are all over the place. The guns you acquire aren’t memorable and the gadgets aren’t too different from what was used in The World is not Enough back in 2000. The game design is solid and offers the gamer the chance to create “Bond” moments by taking the routes and/or actions Bond himself would likely do. Some of them require quick thinking while others encourage out of the box thinking. Shame the rest of the single-player is fairly paint-by-numbers. Visuals are adequate and the music has plenty of the “James Bond Theme” going to keep you in the mood. Framerate does suffer a bit when there are too many enemies on screen, but overall it’s decent.

As their first attempt going the original route, they had some decent ideas, but the execution is too mediocre. Bond fans will enjoy, particularly if they are a fan of that era, but for a first-person shooter, there are so many others that are better.
