Apart from a few references and name-checks here and there, Red Faction II feels like a very different game from its predecessor. Sure, the geo-mod engine is there and getting to blow up stuff is fun and satisfying, but it feels strangely anonymous. Playing a super-soldier named Alias, who, as part of a crack team of other super-soldiers, are out to overthrow Sopot, the tyrannical ruler of the commonwealth, could have been dumped into another game without too many changes. Alias is a cipher with a few lines here and there. It’s the other soldiers you work with who have the personalities. As with a lot of action games, they lean pretty hard into their one-note personalities. There’s not much to care about, but the voice acting is at least above average. Veteran actors Lance Henriksen (as Molov) and a then-unknown Jason Statham (as Shrike) give their roles a little more weight than they might have otherwise.

The rest of the game is a lot of running and shooting with very large weapons or large vehicles/mechs causing untold amounts of mayhem throughout multiple areas including a train line, a silo, a cathedral and a secret base. There’s enough variety to keep it from feeling too mechanical, but it feels like it’s running on fumes well before it gets to the end. It’s perfectly serviceable as a first-person shooter and is well-made from a technical standpoint. The unique energy and the passion that made the original Red Faction is largely absent here and are we’re left with is another okay first-person sci-fi shooter that could have been made by and starred pretty much anyone.
