An independently created game, KSP chronicles the rise, fall, and crashes of the hapless citizens of Kerbin who try and fail spectacularly to launch rockets, space planes, space stations, lunar landers and buggies, and other vehicles to their neighboring planets, chiefly the Mun. I've really enjoyed the demo and watching videos of bold missions as well as explosive blooper reels, and there was something really charming about the little green astronauts who risk their lives to pilot the most ridiculous craft into orbit, or more often the ocean or the ground. KSP is not only an entertaining sandbox game but it's also pretty eye opening about the sheer amount of technical expertise, patience, and effort it takes to launch a space craft, let alone land one.

Also, in case you're wondering, the term 'Kerbal' originally came from a name the developers of this game used for jury-rigged fireworks they made as kids...and which had a habit of exploding.
