Up to 1,000 paratroopers and Royal Marines have marched on Downing Street to petition the Prime Minister to honour a soldier who was killed during the Falklands War.

Commanding officers recommended a gallantry medal for Corporal Stewart McLaughlin, but that citation was lost and an appeal turned down.

Cpl Stewart McLaughlin, 27, was killed by rocket fire in the Battle of Mount Longdon in 1982 whilst leading charges towards Argentine machine-gunners.

The Ministry of Defence has so far been unwilling to consider a retrospective award, with the Army saying there were opportunities to address omissions at the time, and that any changes now would undermine the integrity of the awards and devalue those held by others.
