Everett will explain what you need to do. Trogs are not that dangerous.

There are 100 ingots in the steelyard, and you get nifty prizes for every ten you find. Since your character is stripped of gear when you enter the Pitt, it is worthwhile to collect all ingots in one trip or session.

I used Fallout Wikia as a guide to ingot hunting. There are one or two steps that could be rearranged to improve efficiency, but their guide is a great help.

To start:
2-There are two ingots right in front of you near a dead slave upon entering the steelyard. Take them and the slave's assault rifle.

Moving forward, you will a scene between a slave and his feral brother. His brother will attack, so feel free to shot as soon as you see the Trog.

Move further North, with high enough Science, you can activate a RobCo Security team to clear out a few enemies.

2-Go back to the entrance, climb the ramp to your left to a couch on top of a bus. From this point, jump into the dumper on your left for ingots.
2-Now jump to the adjacent dumpster for another two ingots.
3-Now go to the end of the dumpster line and drop into a small dumpster containing a dead slave. Look at your feet for the ingots.
2-Go up the stairs near the small dumpster. Hop a fence, and look to your right for some ingots amongst barrels.
2-Hop the fence again, and, keeping the fencing on your left, move north along a ledge. Look to your right to see ingots on top of a freight car. Drop down on to a near by freight car, and jump to the one with the ingots.
3-Look to the east and notice another large dumpster. Jump in to it.
2-Drop from the dumpster, and go upstairs again. Instead of going right, go left. In the bungalow on your right, you'll find the ingots and medical supplies.
2-Save in case you get trapped by debris next. Continue south and notice another large dumpster. Walk right up to the dumpster, and then look left for some stairs. Climb the stairs to a roof and jump to the dumpster for the ingots.
2-From the dumpster, jump over. the southern fence. Move right to a dead end, a dead slave, and ingots.

Climb the generator adjacent to the dead slave, and jump over the fence again. Return to the roof you were just on.
