Fallout 4 arguably makes fewer changes to the Bethesda open world RPG template than any previous release from the studio (not counting Redguard and Battlespire), but there's one dimension which Todd Howard's team clearly wanted to improve upon significantly. While the voice acting and NPC interaction might not start winning awards any time soon, the story-related characters are much more expressive both in terms of voice performances and body language than in earlier games. For example, the party member/companion Piper alone seems to have more gestures and facial than all of Skyrim's Nordic automatons combined. Giving the player character a voice of his/her own also adds to the experience, and I for one don't miss those dry laundry lists of text options during dialogue. There's a place for that in PC RPGs, for sure, but not in a mainstream crowdpleaser like Fallout 4.
